Jerry C. Whitaker is a Life Fellow of the SMPTE. A member for more than four decades, he has served the Society in a variety of positions including Chair of the Fall Technical Conference Program Committee (from 2007 until 2013) and Chair of the SMPTE Journal Award Committee (from 2005 until 2016). Mr. Whitaker retired in late 2025 after serving for 25 years as Vice President for Standards Development at ATSC, The Broadcast Standards Association. Mr. Whitaker supported work of the various ATSC Technology and Specialist Groups, and assisted in the development of ATSC Standards and related documents. He also served as Secretary for all ATSC Technology Groups since 2000. In addition, he was closely involved in efforts relating to educational programs. Mr. Whitaker currently serves in a consulting capacity for the organization. Prior to joining ATSC, Mr. Whitaker headed the publishing company Technical Press, based in Morgan Hill, CA. Mr. Whitaker is the author and editor of more than 35 books on technical topics. Mr. Whitaker is a Fellow of the Society of Broadcast Engineers and has served as a Board member and Vice President of the organization.
